On 21 September 1924, in the presence of Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy, alongside the forty-year-old engineer Piero Puricelli, designer and builder of the work, a procession of cars travels along the Milan-Varese motorway for the first time, effectively inaugurating the first highway in the world.
